Venice Carnival 2015 (Carnevale di Venezia) - masquerade costumes and palaces

Venice Carnival (Carnevale di Venezia) should be on most bucket lists.  The masquerade costumes worn by hundreds of participants are traditionally based on 17th and 18th Century ball gowns and suits, but are always completely over the top!  Increasingly fantasy costumes are making an appearance.  Rococco wigs, tricorns and masks also feature.  Some costumes cost literally thousands of euros.

The costume wearers (many are not professionals, just interested 'hobbyists') can be found all over the city - on bridges, in the cobbled streets, by the side of canals or in gondolas.  The central tourist attractions of St Mark's Square (Piazza San Marco) and Rialto Bridge are flooded with people at the weekends.  This is a festival like no other and there is something for everyone - music, fireworks, masked balls, tours and shows; with the backdrop of the regal crumbling buildings, palaces and canals...
